HUBMASTER'S CHOICE FOR FEBRUARY 1996

This page is dedicated to the HUBMASTER'S CHOICE. Each month, the HUBMASTER of ARIZONA'S WEBHUB selects a particularly informative and well-designed web page that either covers Arizona-related information, is administered on an Arizona-based server or is related to Arizona in some other way.
This month's award goes to the web site of an adventure travel company physically located in California, but virtually housed in Tempe.

O.A.R.S.

The Outdoor Adventure River Specialists' Web Site, developed by Rhino Productions, offers information on O.A.R.S. upcoming river trips throughout Western North America. Here you can find more than just itineraries and trip details. There is a "campfire chat" where browsers can relate their adventure travel stories and tips, as well as, a collection of MPeG video clips to download. There are food menus to browse (including recipes) and postcards to send to your friends. (Nifty!) So if you have been in the desert too long and crave some watery adventure, start with O.A.R.S.

Another locally related outdoor site is the electronic version of Tim Toula's book, Rock and Road. This is a compendium of rock climbing areas in North America personally researched by the Arizona resident and climber extraordinaire. Toula's work was published in print by Chockstone Press in 1994 and has been adapted for the World Wide Web by the programmers at Hotwired. Here, one can search a large database of climbing areas, find directions to a climb, learn about the difficulty level and type of rock, and contribute further information to any part of the site. Which makes for a useful living document. Tim claims that this information was used without his knowledge, and advises that the printed version is more accurate and holds information that the web version misses. (It is also easier to toss on the dashboard of your car than most computers!) But, if you are stuck at home or in the office and are longing to be outdoors, this is a great start for planning your next adventure.
